Orienteering and GPS

Registration required (adults) Would you like to learn how to read a topographical map for wilderness travel and how to use a compass and GPS with that topo map so you don't get lost? Join us at the Discovery Center for a day of learning and an orienteering course. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.

Before Class: Please read the book Wilderness Navigation: Finding Your Way Using a Map, Compass, Altimeter &GPS by Bob & Mike Burns, Mountaineers Books, 2025 (fourth edition).

Wild Edibles

Registration required (ages 12+) We will talk about how to preserve what we've found by various methods. Canning, freezing and drying are common methods for this and some of the various aspects of each of these will be explored. For example, there are several ways to dry leaves to make tea, and there are ways to dry fruit that may differ. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.

Shotgun

This program is designed for those who have had some experience with shotguns. We’ll cover safety, appropriate firearms and ammunition, rules of the game, etiquette on the field, and field layout. Firearms and ammunition will be provided, or you may bring your own. Anyone under the age of 16 is REQUIRED to have an adult with them throughout the class and shooting session.

Handgun

This course picks up right where the Basic Handgun course leaves off. You’ll learn the essentials of buying and owning a firearm, understand ammunition basics, and explore safe storage options. Most importantly, you’ll get more hands-on time at the range to build confidence and sharpen your marksmanship skills. Bring your own firearm, or use one of ours—we’ve got you covered.

Small Game Hunting

Discover the world of alternative hunting methods in this hands-on introductory course! Learn the fundamentals of archery, slings, and atlatls, three time-tested tools used for hunting and survival across cultures and history. This class covers the mechanics, techniques, and practical applications of each method, providing a unique opportunity to develop your skills and understanding of primitive projectiles.

Perfect for beginners and experienced outdoor enthusiasts alike-come challenge yourself and explore the past through these traditional hunting techniques!

Rifle

Come join us for a fun .22 Plinking class! Bring nothing but yourselves and an adventurous spirit. We’ll provide the .22 rifles and ammunition.

Archery

Ready to try something powerful, precise, and seriously fun? In Crossbow Basics, you’ll learn how a crossbow works, how to handle it safely, and how to shoot with accuracy and confidence. We’ll cover proper stance, aiming, loading, and basic maintenance, then put those skills into action on the range. Whether it’s your first time or you’re just curious to learn more, this class is a great way to build skills and confidence in a hands-on environment.

Deer Hunting

Deer hunting is challenging, rewarding, and about much more than wearing camouflage and sitting in a stand. It starts weeks—sometimes months—before opening day. This class begins at the very beginning and walks you through what it really takes to prepare for a successful hunt.

You’ll learn about rifle and ammunition selection, how to dress for the hunt, different hunting methods, scouting techniques, animal identification, and how to properly sight in your rifle. This is a knowledge-based class designed to build understanding and confidence—it is not a shooting class.
