Sample Collection Protocol
New World Screwworm (NWS) flies or larvae can be found in pre-exisiting wounds or mucous membranes of animals. Suspected cases of NWS infection in wildlife are reportable to the Missouri Department of Conservation. This guide is provided to aid in the collection and submission of larvae for official laboratory identification.
Supplies needed:
- Gloves
- 70% alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl)
- Forceps
- Vial/Container
- Ziploc bag
- Data form
Collection Procedures
- Protect yourself by wearing gloves and avoiding direct contact with larvae
- Using forceps, gently remove larvae of different sizes from several sites within the open wound. Ensure samples are removed from the deepest part of the wound, as NWS larvae burrow deep into tissues. Larvae found more superficially may be a different species.
- Place the larvae in the vial or container and ensure all specimens are completely submerged in alcohol.
- Fill out the data form.
Submitting Samples
- Contact the Missouri Department of Conservation (573) 522-0142 or https://mdc12.mdc.mo.gov/applications/WildlifeHealthReporting/Intake for directions of where to drop off or provide location of where to be picked up.
If you suspect NWS on livestock or pets please contact your veterinarian and the Missouri Department of Agriculture at (573) 751-3377 Animal.Health@mda.mo.gov
